Summer is here, and with it comes the infamous “I’m bored” chorus from our kids.
We all know how challenging it can be to keep them entertained and engaged without breaking the bank.

But worry not! I’ve compiled a list of creative, cost-effective outdoor activities that are perfect for kids aged 5-17. These activities will not only keep them busy but also stimulate their creativity and help them use those brain muscles even when school’s out.

Creative Outdoor Activities

• Give each child a list and a bag to collect their treasures.

• Set a time limit and let the adventure begin!

DIY Obstacle Course

Why It’s Special:
It promotes physical activity, problem-solving, and teamwork as kids navigate and build the course together.

How to Play:
• Use household items like pool noodles, hula hoops, and ropes to create obstacles.

• Include activities like jumping through hoops, balancing on a beam, or crawling under a rope.

• Time each child as they complete the course, or have them race in teams.

Water Balloon Piñata

Why It’s Special:
This game adds a refreshing twist to the traditional piñata and is perfect for hot summer days.

How to Play:
• Fill several balloons with water and hang them from a tree or clothesline.

• Blindfold the kids, spin them around gently, and let them take turns trying to burst the balloons with a bat or stick.

• Make sure to have plenty of towels on hand for drying off!

 Backyard Camping

Why It’s Special:
It brings the excitement of camping right to your backyard, promoting outdoor skills and family bonding.

How to Play:
• Set up a tent and prepare a camping area in your backyard.

• Plan a night of storytelling, star-gazing, and perhaps even a little ghost story for older kids.

• Don’t forget the s’mores and a cozy sleeping bag!

Creative Chalk Art

Why It’s Special:
It encourages creativity and artistic expression in a fun and interactive way.

How to Play:

• Provide a variety of colorful chalks.

• Encourage kids to draw their favorite animals, create a giant hopscotch game, or make a mural.

• Have a mini art show at the end to showcase their masterpieces.

Giant Bubble Making

Why It’s Special:
It’s a magical activity that fascinates kids of all ages, and it’s great for a science lesson on the side.

How to Play:

• Mix a solution of water, dish soap, and a little glycerin or corn syrup.

• Use wands made from straws and string, or purchase a giant bubble wand.

• Have a bubble-blowing contest or just enjoy the beauty of the bubbles floating away.

Gardening Projects

Why It’s Special:
This activity teaches kids about responsibility, biology, and the environment while enjoying some hands-on fun.

How to Play:

• Assign each child a small garden plot or container to plant flowers, vegetables, or herbs.

• Teach them about plant care, watering schedules, and the importance of sunlight.
